anZel and the sleeping god
Written by jlz on April 23, 2006 – 7:55 am -anZel likes to pray to the sleeping god quite often. During his sleep, he will raise both of his hands for no apparent reason…

Written by jlz on April 22, 2006 – 8:05 pm -We’ve been shuttling back and forth to the hospital the last few days because anZel’s in the high risk category of having jaundice. He’s been checked multiple times (blood drawn from the back of his feet! yikes!) and the bilirubin score is about 17.7. I guess for him, 18.2 is considered to have jaundice. So he’s pretty close.
The doctor ordered a biliblanket for anZel since the last couple times the score hasn’t come down. Here’s a couple pictures of him.

We pretty much have to keep the biliblanet on ALL the time. We do take it off during feeding time so he’s a bit more comfortable.
Here’s a site with some good info on Your Baby, Jaundice, and Phototherapy:
Posted in Photos, anZel | No Comments »The biliblanket provides the highest level of therapeutic light available to treat your baby. This form of light is also found in sunlight. The strength of light form the biliblanket is about the same, as you would get in the shade on a sunny day, yet is safer because the biliblanket filters out potentially harmful ultraviolet and infrared energy.
A pad of woven fibers is used to transport light from a light source to your baby. This covered fiberoptic pad is placed directly against your baby to bathe the skin in light. Absorption of this light leads to the elimination of bilirubin.
Engineering Dad meets Smarty Pants
Written by beeber on April 22, 2006 – 8:21 am -Being an engineer, dad tries to employ technology in every way he can. This has been very helpful pre-anZel…making DVDs and CD, charting contractions and documenting (blogs) as well as keeping friends and family informed via the web.
The real challenge of dad’s patience and limitless gadgetries came to a stall two nights ago when anZel refused to sleep in his crib (something which dad insisted on pre-anZel) or by himself in our bed (something which dad refused pre-anZel). Dad tried to trick the little one to sleep at night by placing him in the kitchen with the vent on. It worked in the morning but not at night. No problem. Dad recorded the vent noise, burned a CD, placed anZel in his crib and played the vent noise. VIOLA! But anZel knew better. He started with a little squeak and let out cries that pierced dad’s ears and racked up his engineering brain. Dad gave in by walking the hall. And finally, dad gave in and placed anZel on his chest and got five (1st night) and three (2nd night) hours of sleep. That’s what dad has been doing for the past two nights. Forget about technology, nothing beats the cry of a child in the middle of the night!
On another note, I think dad has been secretly thinking about adopting Macsoul2 as his child instead.

Written by jlz on April 21, 2006 – 10:37 am -Another night has gone by. anZel is now 3 days and 3.5 hours young. It was another somewhat tough night. Not as bad as the first night but we still didn’t get much sleep.
After feeding, it was hard to get anZel to go to sleep. It’s too quiet or something. During the day yesterday, I had discovered the power of the kitchen vent fan. Putting anZel underneath the vent with the fan on high, he was able to calm down and sleep the whole time.

It kind of worked last night as well. At around 2AM, when he wouldn’t sleep, I put him in this same position and he was able to sleep until he got hungry.
While he was sleeping under the fan, I recorded the fan noise using macsoul2 and burned it onto a CD. I was hoping that I can play that using a CD player by his crib and keep him asleep after feeding.
Sigh, how wrong was I! After leaving him in the crib for 5 mins, he started crying again, even with the recorded fan noise is going on!
So for the whole night, I had to hold him next to me so he and I can both get some sleep. Amazingly, we slept for 5 hours!!!
Actually I kind of feel guilty about that since he’s supposed to be fed every 2-3 hours.

Written by jlz on April 20, 2006 – 6:38 pm -Went for the post partum check up today. Along the way anZel made A LOT of people turn heads and everyone was saying how cute he is, which we obviously agree.
anZel getting blood drawn…amazingly he didn’t make a sound!
Doesn’t anZel look like a warrior here?
Or does he look more like a buddha?
anZel had his post partum check today and he only dropped 8 oz since birth…

Written by jlz on April 20, 2006 – 6:16 pm -anZel has been kinda cranky mainly due to hunger. However, he did really well today at the post partum visit and latched on amazingly. He also didn’t cry when he was put into the car seat. Beeber was so happy she gave him a 99/100 for the day! She also encouraged him to get to 100. However, grandma Helen says “Never give 100!” Beeber obviously disagrees with that. ![]()
anZel’s crying…
Written by jlz on April 20, 2006 – 8:11 am -I am sure I am not the only parent thinks this, but anZel’s got a LOUD cry…especially when it’s 3am in the morning!!
When he really gets going, his little mouth opens wide and the “ahhhhh….” comes out nonstop.
His crying can be descibed in Chinese as:
1. 驚天動地
2. 不鳴則已,一鳴驚人
3. 亂石穿空,驚濤拍岸
