anZel is beginning to grasp the idea of circle of life. When the cut tulips’ petals started to fall around the vase, I told him that the flowers had reached the end of their lives. He was obviously distorted by this information. He was afraid to touch the discoloured petals. I had to place one on my face to show him that it was all right to touch it.

anZel and I went to a pet store for the first time today. He saw cats, gerbils, rats, birds and snakes. When we came to the aquarium, he was quite fascinated with all the fish. Because Auntie Amy gave him a book with Clown fish (Not Nemo), he enjoyed checking them out for in real life. Then we came upon a tank with all sorts of fish, except there was an unlucky fellow who laid motionless in the bottom of the tank.

mum: This fish is dead. That’s why it’s not moving.
anZel: This fish is dead. These are alive and swimming.
mum: That’s right.
anZel: This fish is dead.
mum: That’s right. It can’t swim any more.
anZel: Come on. Swim (wanting desperately for the fish to come alive again)
mum: I am sorry, anZel. The fish is dead. It can’t swim.
anZel gently touched the tank to comfort the dead fish.
