Troubleshooting Behavior

I am interested in finding out how you go about troubleshooting network (e.g. downtime), security (e.g. virus infection) or application problems using logs. What logs do you look at? What system tools do you use? What do you look for in the logs?

I know this is a pretty general question and it’s probably difficult to write the process down.
